M. Ponirin is geboren op 7 augustus 1946. Momenteel is hij woonachtig in Sanur (Bali). Ponirin heeft de kunstacademie gevolgd om het niveau te bereiken dat hij nu heeft. Op 18-jarige leeftijd leerde de toen nog jonge Ponirin schilderen, omdat hij zich had aangesloten bij een group kunstenaars. Ponirin is de grondlegger van de borobudurstijl.
Hij heeft schilderijen verkocht over de hele wereld en er hangt zelfs een doek in het AMAY museum te Luik (Belgie).
